Detection Technique for Artificially-Illuminated Objects in the Outer Solar System and Beyond

Loeb and Turner propose tracking brightness changes with distance to help distinguish intrinsic illumination from reflected sunlight. The model requires assumptions about luminosity, geometry, spectrum and albedo. They retain conventional variability from phase, surfaces, outgassing, rotation and binary effects, plus cloud and geometry limitations for exoplanets. Historical telescope forecasts and inconclusive null results limit the proposal. The paper reports no artificial-light detection or replicated experiment.

What we checked

The received arXiv v3 PDF is stamped 13 March 2012. A specialist read leaves 1–8 (19,194 characters); root read reference leaves 9–10 (4,061 characters). Together they covered all ten supplied text leaves, 23,255 characters. A specialist viewed initial native layouts 1, 3 and 8, then the remaining seven disjoint layouts, for all ten received pages. The title is unfoliated and subsequent pages bear folios 1–9. No figures, tables or plots were observed. Named mathematical notation was checked, with fine-glyph limits. Root reviewed complete analytical packets and frozen hashes, but did not read the entire scientific body or view native pixels.

Complete supplied preprint text and ten native layouts; original-version gaps

How we check sources

Not checked yet

  • This is a proposed observational test, not an artificial-light detection, experimental replication or verified extraterrestrial object. Ordinary variability needs object-specific modelling.
  • All ten received native layouts were viewed, but layout collation is not an exhaustive glyph audit. Named mathematical notation was visually checked; tiny URLs, every citation glyph and diacritics were not individually certified. No uncertain glyph was reconstructed.
  • Ten received PDF leaves consist of an unfoliated title and nine numbered pages. This preserves the arXiv comment of nine pages without inferring a missing leaf or authenticating another rendition.
  • The received rendition is arXiv:1110.6181v3. Journal DOI 10.1089/ast.2011.0758 is related metadata; its rendition was not received or compared. Telescope and survey forecasts are historical.
  • Reference entries were read as bibliography, not as cited-original bodies or data. Earlier independently accepted readings remain preserved.
  • Funding acknowledgements do not establish secret programme access, agency tasking or custody. Low inhabited-object priors and multiple search failures limit conclusions from null results.
