SETI via Leakage from Light Sails in Exoplanetary Systems
Guillochon and Loeb model possible leakage from hypothetical light-sail propulsion systems. Simulated observing windows depend on assumed inhabited systems and operating choices; the paper supplies no detection or deployed apparatus.
Read the paper at arxiv.orgWhat we checked
A specialist read all six supplied text pages, 25,753 normalized characters, and viewed all six native layouts, five figures, three numbered equations, acknowledgment and 16 reference entries. Root reviewed the complete final analytical report and evidence and verified pins, without root primary reading. Official v2 metadata is 3 September 2015; the served native draft and PDF metadata say 2 October 2018, and a prior author bibliography says 2016. Those version boundaries remain unresolved.

How we check sources
Not checked yet
- Einstein grant PF3-140108 is explicitly assigned to James Guillochon; Loeb-specific support is unstated. NASA policy goals, Breakthrough telescope allocations and academic comments do not establish government tasking or access. Grant originals, v1, journal, historical deposit bytes, model code and cited originals were not reviewed. The later FRB paper cites this work; that dependence supplies no independent detection.
Source limitations
- The mock Earth–Mars journey and ten simulated systems are model outputs, rather than observed sails, inhabited systems or deployed apparatus. Geometry, reflectivity, bandwidth, continuing mission activity and observing coverage are assumed; ignored engineering challenges may alter the proposed signal. No empirical classifier, survey or replication was supplied.
- The paper’s approximate 10% per-system probability and claim that ten inhabited systems guarantee detection remain discrepant. Under illustrative independent 10% probabilities, the chance of at least one is about 65%, without replicating or correcting the source model.
