Fast Radio Bursts from Extragalactic Light Sails

Lingam and Loeb consider whether some fast radio bursts could be artificial propulsion beams. The paper presents conditional models and possible tests, explicitly treating the artificial explanation as more speculative than astrophysical alternatives.

What we checked

A specialist read all seven supplied text pages, 26,661 normalized characters, and viewed all seven native layouts: 14 numbered equations, six content footnotes, acknowledgment and 51 reference entries; there are no figures or tables. Root reviewed the complete final analytical report and evidence and independently verified pins, without root primary reading. The official v2 submission is 27 February 2017; the native draft is dated 28 February.

Complete supplied v2 text and native layouts; model unreplicated

How we check sources

Not checked yet

  • The journal version, v1, original FRB observations, code, funding records and 51 cited bodies were not reviewed. An attributed correction to another paper remains unverified. Historical FRB counts and future-search suggestions do not establish current observations or an implemented agreement.
  • Partial support is attributed to a Breakthrough Prize Foundation grant for the Starshot Initiative; individual recipient, award identifier, date and amount are unknown. Named helpful commenters are academic feedback, without a supplied government approach, programme invitation, access or custody record.

Source limitations

  • Artificial origin remains a speculative hypothesis, with natural alternatives and a broadband design challenge. Conditional power, size and emitting-civilization bounds reuse assumed inputs and are not a detected civilization, measured population or independent statistical test. Dispersion, efficiency, relativistic approximation, selection, duty-cycle and calibration questions remain unreplicated.
