Comment and Reply on Meteor storm evidence against the recent formation of lunar crater Giordano Bruno

Nockolds proposes distortion or propaganda as an alternative explanation for the medieval account. Withers acknowledges limited Latin and chronicle access and reports a later translation discussion. The exchange preserves competing interpretations and dependence on the same historical narrative.

What we checked

Root actually read both author-host PDF pages, zero-based 0–1, printed 465–466, including Nockolds’s comment, Withers’s reply and the complete bibliography. No figures, tables or equations appear. The comment was received October 29, 2001, the reply November 7; both were accepted December 18, 2001. Journal year 2002 is retained without an invented issue day. Nockolds’s propaganda hypothesis is an interpretation, not proven fabrication. Withers says he is not fluent in Latin and knows the chronicle through Hartung’s quotation. His reported discussion with Waddington and quotation of a Cambridge Conference Network post update the 2001 position without establishing the date or narrative’s truth.

How we check sources

Not checked yet

  • The full supplied author-host copy of Waddington’s CCNet letter item 6 has now been received and read under S7778. Its March 28, 2001 copy date is distinct from Withers’s later reported private discussion, whose exact date, channel and original remain absent. Original CCNet archive headers and complete issue, chronicle, translation, ephemeris inputs and physical journal master were not received. Academic contact establishes no government approach, programme or achieved access.
  • The historical distortion hypothesis has not been independently validated. Knowing invention, faithful relay and authorship timing remain unsettled. Both sides depend on the same Gervase narrative and cited works.
  • Stubbs’s 1879 edition is listed with different extents in the 2001 paper and this exchange. The edition or pagination relationship remains unresolved. No original bibliography item was newly acquired merely because its citation was read.
