Turning up the heat on `Oumuamua
Forbes and Loeb forecast near-Sun interstellar-body encounters and propose spectroscopy. Encounter rates and candidate probabilities depend on uncertain density, orientation, population and detection assumptions. Listed probabilities do not confirm individual origins. Ordinary cometary explanations, bound-orbit caveats and an ISON non-detection remain explicit. Parameter and catalogue-filter discrepancies are unresolved. Forbes’s fellowship is distinct from work-level grant support; neither establishes government access.
Read the paper at arxiv.orgWhat we checked
A specialist actually read all six supplied arXiv:1901.00508v1 pages, 29,603 normalized characters, and viewed six native layouts, including equations 1–6, two figures, both tables, all 31 Table 2 rows and 47 bibliography entries. Root reviewed the complete final analytical packet and independently verified its inventory; root primary-body reading is false. Submission/margin date is 2 January 2019; the native draft header says 4 January. Related journal DOI is metadata, not a final journal-version reading receipt.
Received written text and native layouts; original-record and interpretation gaps
How we check sources
Not checked yet
- A single-object abundance estimate, uncertain sizes and assumed stellar/comet distributions drive conditional rates. Monte Carlo samples are simulated units, not observed encounters; fragment groups may share progenitors. Orientation selection and priors do not establish extraterrestrial artifacts or confirmed interstellar candidates.
- Negative velocity values inferred from instantaneous orbital elements may still describe bound comets. The printed table probabilities are conditional on a chosen prior; their arithmetic sum is not validation or an individual origin finding. Ordinary outgassing, composition, albedo and insulation alternatives and standard cometary fits remain.
- The native LSR velocity ordering differs between prose and Table 1. A printed Ross perihelion differs from the stated catalogue cut. Original catalogue snapshots, orbit uncertainties, code and corrected parameters were not received; no silent repair or replication is claimed.
- Cited ISON observations yielded a non-detection with an ordinary surface-loss explanation. Spectroscopy and instrument forecasts are dated proposals with timing, field and sensitivity limits. Raw spectra, all cited originals, three linked footnote bodies and current instrument performance remain unreviewed here.
- John C. Forbes is the stated ITC fellowship recipient; the Breakthrough Prize grant is attributed at work level without an individual recipient or Starshot earmark. John Raymond is thanked for conversations without dates or transcripts. Journal collation, correspondence, reviewer material and fine original-glyph assurance remain gaps.
