Halo observations provide evidence of airborne cubic ice in the Earth’s atmosphere
The authors compare reported Chilean halo observations with ice-crystal models. A model match supports their proposed interpretation, while direct atmospheric cubic-ice sampling remains missing. Acknowledged scholarly comments and weather-data assistance have incomplete contact records. The supplied paper does not establish an explanation for all UAP or current scientific consensus.

Root read all 386 supplied text labels, including 16 references and terminal acknowledgments, across two returns with 308 matching overlaps and no variants. Root also viewed all six whole native PDF pages, printed 6080–6085, including five figure groups and two tables. The received 937,006-byte PDF was hash-verified. Text payload contains 23,765 codepoints excluding labels. Observations are dated November 27–28, 1997; the paper footer dates publication November 20, 2000. The offered file is in an ESO personal directory; uploader identity and deposit authority remain unknown.

How we check sources
Not checked yet
- The larger original photograph set, timing calibration, raw radiosonde data, ray-tracing code and physical crystal samples were not reviewed. Selected enhanced images, remote weather measurements and model assumptions limit inference. Alternative polycrystals were discussed but not actually simulated or ruled out.
- The paper contains inconsistent figure/model labels. Native pages clarify some extracted mathematical symbols, but the original calculations were not independently reproduced. Direct atmospheric cubic-ice evidence is described as missing. This historical paper does not establish present consensus or an explanation for unrelated UAP reports.
- Comments attributed to Walter Tape and Timo Nousiainen, and weather-data help attributed to Günther Können, lack exact contact dates, channels and original correspondence. Personal-directory hosting does not authenticate a publisher master, an author upload or ESO endorsement. Whalley’s separate 1981 original and other cited works remain unreviewed.
