Close Encounters of the Interstellar Kind: Examining the Capture of Interstellar Objects in Near Earth Orbit

Mukherjee, Siraj, Trac and Loeb simulate capture and retention of interstellar objects near Earth, then estimate populations and survey detectability under assumed incoming velocities, abundance, sizes and lifetimes. The manuscript identifies no actual captured interstellar object.

What we checked

A specialist read all fourteen supplied text pages and native layouts: 67,526 Unicode page characters, twelve figures, thirteen numbered equations and 48 references. Root reviewed the complete analytical packet and verified its files. Version 2 is dated 7 August 2023; native title and 9 August draft dates differ from the catalogue.

Complete supplied fourteen-page manuscript; conditional capture model

How we check sources

Not checked yet

  • Simulated capture and assumed populations are forecasts; no captured interstellar object is identified. Selection, omitted forces, size, velocity, lifetime and visibility assumptions limit results. A negative cross-section coefficient conflicts with positive plots; categorical absence wording conflicts with fractional expected counts. Survival bands are not confidence that objects exist.
  • Original observations, data, code, grants, earlier and journal versions remain unreviewed. Mukherjee lists NASA 80NSSC22K0722 and a McWilliams–PSC seed grant; Trac lists that NASA award, 80NSSC22K0821 and NSF PHY2020295. No Loeb-specific award or government invitation is stated. Bibliography entries do not establish receipt of their originals.
