Interstellar Objects Outnumber Solar System Objects in the Oort Cloud
Siraj and Loeb infer a potentially large interstellar population from prior observations and population assumptions. The paper introduces no new data; selection, size distributions and model sensitivity limit its abundance estimates.
Read the paper at arxiv.orgWhat we checked
A specialist read all four supplied text pages and viewed their whole native layouts: 16,855 Unicode characters, four figures and 23 references. Root reviewed the complete analytical report, evidence and private pins; root primary-body reading remains unverified. Official v2 is dated 22 July 2021 while the native preprint and file timestamps say 23 July.
Complete supplied four-page manuscript; conditional abundance model
How we check sources
Not checked yet
- Figure 4 and the prose use different lower size limits. An analyst’s dimensional check also questions the equal-mass wording under the stated size-distribution definition; neither issue was silently repaired or independently replicated. Original observations, calibration, code, journal and earlier versions, historical byte identity and fine-glyph fidelity remain unreviewed.
- The work acknowledges partial Breakthrough Prize Foundation support, without specifying an individual recipient, award identifier, amount or date. This is public support rather than a government approach or custody account. Cited earlier Borisov and population studies are dependencies; the bibliography is not 23 newly consumed originals.
Source limitations
- The authors report no new data generated or analyzed. A prior Borisov detection, Oort-population estimates and dust and planet literature anchor conditional extrapolations. Detection selection, single-object uncertainty, size distributions, composition, focusing and lifetimes limit the estimated populations; model plots and proposed occultations are not new measurements or artificial-origin evidence.
